How to asses a care home

By Johnnie Rowntree

It's a huge decision, to commit to a care home for either yourself or for a loved one and that's the reason that a lot of thought and research must go into this decision. You have got to know that you are making the right choice before you commit.

It's always a good idea to visit the care homes that you have shortlisted as this can give you a very real idea of what it's like to stay there and you can get a feel for the atmosphere as well as how it's run.

While you are at the care home, you should have a few questions in your mind to think about so that you can make an assessment as to whether the care home is going to be appropriate. And the first thing that you need to ask yourself is whether the staff are trained enough to be able to take care of your needs. If you have a disability or need help in certain areas, do the staff have the knowledge and the ability to provide this type of care for you?

You also need to question whether the place is accessible. This means, can you still get out to the places that you like to visit and can friends and family come and visit you easily?

It's important to also think about whether the care home has the right equipment for you. If you need adjustable baths and armchairs as well as support such as handrails, it's essential that you check that these are in place. If you have any special dietary requirements, it's also important that you check that these can be catered to.

As you look around each care home, make sure that you speak to the residents and staff members that are there so that you can get a realistic view of what the care home is like.
